About the Artist:
Laura has a Master in Fine Arts. She is from Medellin, Columbia and moved to Long Beach a few years ago. She worked for a several years on her undergraduate degree in architecture. She then decided to study abroad in California. She was excited to explore the weather, environment and beaches of California.
Formal Analysis:
She is inspired by the jungle. She admires how nature is built and creates life forms that are interconnected and how it all comes together as a whole organism in natural ecosystems. Laura also admires the “intelligence” of nature and how it continuously formed her life through organic patterns of growth that are full of beauty and wisdom. She is inspired by the philosophy of Pantheism, because he envisioned the whole universe as full of spirit and intelligence.
Content Analysis:
Her work explores how pattern and color function as structural elements build imagery and composition. She constructs a visual narrative about the natural world. She expresses the idea of organic growth in natural ecosystems as the jungle and wild forests. She is interested in time evolving and how plants grow in space. She is also interested in the way plants work as a whole that contributes to growing towards evolution.
Synthesis/My Analysis:
I thought that Laura’s exhibit was interesting. When I first came in the room, I noticed about how colorful her art was, which I liked. She used a variety of colors for each piece. When I talked to her afterwards, I realized that she was inspired by the jungle and nature. It was different to hear her say that her inspirations come from the jungle and that the jungle was her home. She says that the jungle is where she comes from and “where my roots are planted”. The jungle brings her visualization into the world and acts as a bond of a metaphor that supports her creative life as an inner force towards her growth.
