Wk 9 – Artist Conversation – Janelle & Antonio

Artists: Janelle & Antonio
Gallery: CSULB School of Art

About the Artist:
Janelle is from Big Bear Lake and Antonio is from Los Angeles. They are both in the Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship club on campus. They have a get together every Thursday on campus and the club consisted of about 150+ members. They study the bible and worship on campus. They are also a social club that hangs out on the weekends.

Formal Analysis:
Janelle’s artwork consisted of strings and beans. She wanted her art to represent a community theme. Antonio used bridges and was a blueish and grayish color. The color blue represented the future. He was inspired by Lana Del Rey.

Content Analysis:
Janelle’s community theme was interesting. She explained that it is important to be recognized as an individual and to belong to a group. She says that it is important to feel as if there is somewhere safe. Everyone should add to a group of people. It is also meaningful to recognize others as individual people. Antonio used bridges because he explained that in today’s society, people want to build walls and exclude people. He wants a stronger community. He was inspired by the music video called Love by Lana Del Rey because in the video, it showed people holding the world on their hands.

Synthesis/My Experience:
I really loved hearing about their inspirations and why they chose to make their art. I thought it was interesting how Antonio was inspired to use bridges instead of walls. It is true that people are building walls in today’s society, which is indirectly referring to Trump, in my opinion. I like the idea of bridges because it connects people from different races, types, and cultures together. Janelle’s theme is also relatable because it was about the community as well. It is important for everyone to fit in somewhere, like school, family, and friends.
